The main tool of choice for developing strength from the outside in is the Russian Kettlebell. This tool of strength development has been around for at least 300 years. It was popular here in the States during the later half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Over the years the Kettlebell in America faded into obscurity, while in Russia and Soviet block countries, it became a secret weapon to develop hard men and women into rugged warriors. The Kettlebell (Girya in Russian) eventually became a national sport and source of national pride.
Now thanks to the efforts of Pavel Tsatsouline, John DuCane and
DragonDoor.com, the Russian Kettlebell has returned to America.

Millman also goes on to say:

By strengthening the body and pushing our physical limits, we can find inner strength that we didn't know we had. When you're body says quit, but you find a way to press on and get one more, that is strength. In American football, when a running back gets hit, he pushes forward trying to get one more inch.
